What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday 2020

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the season of Lent, forty days leading up to Easter. Traditionally on this day we receive the imposition of ashes in the shape of a cross on our foreheads. This is a physical symbol that reminds us we are but dust and to dust we shall return. It is a time of self-examination as we allow God to further shape us into the image of Jesus. We align our hearts with the suffering of Jesus as we move ever closer toward the crucifixion and resurrection.

What you can expect at our service

Some Sanctuarians tells us that Ash Wednesday is their favorite service of the year. It is a somber, beautiful service: a time of experiential reflection. Music, scripture, and poetry focus our thoughts and prepare our hearts. Prayer stations draw us into self-examination and confession. Communion and the imposition of ashes turn us towards Jesus and the cross as we enter the season of Lent.

We will be doing a few things differently this year to keep things safe for those who attend in person and to extend some of the experiential elements to those joining us online.
